Hello Lovelies
Last night marked one of the most exclusive events in New York’s social calendar, The Met Ball, an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Anyone who’s anyone graces the red carpet of this event often in the most elaborate and experimental of looks, all hoping to capture the essence of the year’s particular theme.Head of the organising committee is none other than fashion tour de force, Anna Wintour editor-in-chief of fashion bible Vogue, she also sets the guest list. If you’re not on the official list then a ticket will set you back a mere $25000, not to mention the cost of a haute couture creation and of course an insane amount of expensive jewelry, better to get in Anna’s good book then!!!
The ball marks the opening of the Institute’s annual exhibition and has been running since 1946, with a different theme each year that also inspires the event’s dress code. This year’s theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass. Since this is one of “THE” places to make a mark in the fashion world guests will often go to great lengths to be noticed on the red carpet, some satisfy the critics and others get marked down on history’s own worst dressed list.
Here’s my pick of this years looks and why
The Good
Lot’s of ladies chose Red in homage to China’s flag but Emma cut an exquisite silhouette in this deep Jade coloured Ralph Lauren Creation. The Jade stone’s value in China is akin to that of Gold and Diamonds, the Edie Parker clutch with dragon detail adds a simple but theme specific finishing touch.
Ziyi Zhang is for me one of the most beautiful actresses and her movies simply stunning. I love this elegant Carolina Herrera gown and it’s subtle nods to the theme by the addition of a Chinese collar and small poppy flower details.
Jennifer also wore a dress featuring poppy details but this Dior cutout gown was super sexy. She accessorised with dark nails and a single diamond bracelet, which complimented the dress’s intricately embroided neckline (I’m not sure but it looks like there could also be some jade in there?) Not content with looking this fabulous on the night, by all accounts Ms. Lawrence rocked up at the after party looking even hotter in a figure hugging silver number!
Emily Blunt is simply perfect in pale blue Prada with beautiful beading and navy blue full length cape. She kept her make up classic and accessorised with diamond drops from Chinese Haute Jeweller – Anna Hu, a perfect interpretation of the theme.
The Bad
Some raved about this look, but for me despite the obvious nods to the theme the dress just doesn’t seem to work, which is a shame as Chloe is known for pushing fashion boundaries and I often love her looks. It might’ve looked better without the arms but there’s just too much going on here for me.
The Kardashian Matriarch went for red draping with a high neckline and thigh split, it’s actually quite simple on it’s own but the accessories here are all wrong and the look is far too fussy. Those shoes are not for this dress and the earrings look like they belong stitched onto those shoulder pads.
The Ugly
I’m not quite sure what this look has to do with China or looking glasses except that perhaps Grimes didn’t think to use one before she left the house!
Look, I absolutely love SJP she’s a fashion chameleon! The Philip Treacy headpiece is amazing, if a bit Chinese restaurant, but the H&M conscious collection custom dress looks like they raided the fabric odds and ends bin! I’m actually not far wrong on that since Parker explained that “they basically dug up every piece of old fabric they could find in Sweden, and it’s all been incorporated into this!”
I’m not going to mention Rhianna, I expect you’ve already seen what she wore and the fashion jury is out on it! Love it or loathe it, she certainly got everyone’s attention which was of course the aim! I wasn’t a fan of all the see through gowns (Beyoncé, J LO et al), though it’s fair to say that those ladies work damned hard on their bodies!
Did you like or hate any of the same looks?
Peace and Love

My favourites: FKA Twigs, Lady Gaga and Rihanna. I also agree with you on all those see through gowns, we see them every year.

Yes, I kind of liked Gaga’s look also. 😀

Emma Roberts and Emily Blunt are both such natural (seeming) beauties. They both look so beautiful but my favourite dress has to be Ziyi Zhang in Carolina Herrera, it’s fabulous. I can’t mention SJP, very disappointing ‘odds and ends bin’ 😂 xx

I liked Sarah Jessica Parker’s costume. But, I am not up on fashion, I just like what I like.
